The Golden Triangle, named after its 3 primary cities of Columbus, West Point, and Starkville, is a 5-county region with a population of 147,383 in east central Mississippi. The most recognizable demand driver is Mississippi State University in Starkville, which employs 5,900 people and has an enrollment of 22,649 students. The largest demand driver in Columbus is the Columbus Air Force Base, with 2,697 civilian & military jobs and an economic impact of roughly $315 million.
The Golden Triangle is home to a robust and growing manufacturing sector, anchored by Yokohama Tire, International Paper, Airbus Helicopters, Steel Dynamics, and the PACCAR Engine Factory. Steel Dynamics has led the way investing in the area, highlighted by a $2.5 billion investment in November of 2022. PACCAR, Huber Engineered Woods, APEX Ammunition LLC, and others have also invested heavily in the area (see Economic Development below for more details). The largest hospital in the area is Baptist Hospital – Golden Triangle, a 323-bed hospital that employs 1,100 people. OCH Regional Medical Center contributes another 96 beds and employs another 650 people. Golden Triangle Regional Airport ($272 million economic impact) and Golden Triangle Industrial Park (3,000 acres adjacent to the airport) are other major economic drivers in the region.
